For a website to be successful the name is extremely
important. Preferably it should be short, descriptive
and memorable. ArtUK.com is the perfect example. In
fact, it is probably the best name for a UK based art
website and on search engines it’s a frequently
searched term itself. If you are part of Art UK you
are guaranteed to get an increase in traffic to your
site
We know from experience that for a small art website
it is almost impossible to be seen on the all important
first few pages of search engines but there is strength
in numbers and if you stick with ArtUK.com we will
help you be near the top.

How can I sell my Art on the Internet?
The Internet has created more opportunities for Artists
to sell their Art than ever before. It allows Artists
to reach a much wider audience for their Art not just
locally or nationally but even globally. Every Artist
can now have their own Gallery to exhibit and sell
their work online and with PayPal it’s become
easy to complete sales on the Internet too.
Having said that we need to remember that there are
over 100,000,000 websites on the World Wide Web. That
means billions of Artists pages also trying to sell
Art online like you. It’s a bit like trying to
win the lottery. It’s extremely competitive.
Most Artists website are rarely seen
Every day in the UK about 50,000 people use the internet
search engines to search for Art for sale online, UK
Art Galleries, UK artist’s websites etc.
However, they usually only look at the first 4 or
5 pages. If your website is not there your chances
of being seen are slim.
Even if you have a beautifully designed website it’s
not a lot of use if you don’t get visitors. It’s
like having a shop in the desert when you need to be
on the High st. It’s all about location, location,
location as they say. You need to increase your traffic flow.
So how can I get my art seen by more people on the
internet?
One good way is to be part of a website that has good
visibility on the first pages of search engine results.
ArtUk.com for example. The words art UK and UK art,
are a popular search terms themselves. So having a
descriptive domain name is very helpful. From ArtUK
you can link to your main website or you might decide
that all you need is your ArtUK site. Considering the
extra promotional opportunities that ArtUK offers that
makes sense.
What about Selling my Art on eBay?
Another marketing strategy that you might try, to
sell your art online is to put your work on eBay. Some
Artists have been quite successful selling Art online
this way. On the ARTUK FORUM there is an artist with the username Flashart, who has written a very good post about his experience with selling in ebay. He seems happy with the results. The main drawback for some Artists seems to be that prices
tend to be very low on eBay, but, Hey we're not all Damien or Tracy, an extra few £100's a month can make a real difference for most of us.
In my work as an Art Consultant
I regularly meet people who have bought Art on eBay.
Usually, they have paid £50- £100 and it
does seem that they’ve gotten a good deal. I
think that an Artist who is very prolific can make
money selling art on eBay and there are some Artists who
ask quite higher prices. I would say give it a try if that’s
the direction that you want to go in but If you've got your art in Galleries they won't be too happy if you sell your work cheaply on eBay even if takes only 20 minutes to make another one. For one artist it might mean a £100 an hour job for others it might mean selling your soul to the devil. Personally, I
love eBay and I use it often to buy things, though
I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than £30
on an item. People just expect eBay to be cheap.
ArtUK will soon be launching its own online retail
Art market place where Artists, Art Gallery owners
and Private Sellers will be able to display individual
pieces of Art with a price. Buyers will contact the
seller directly to complete the sale. The picture image
will also link to the seller’s website where
the buyer can view more work for sale. The prices will
be a bit higher than on ebay. So hopefully that will be
another way that you can sell your art online.
What can I do to make my website search engine friendly?
If you own a website and you want to get it a higher
search engine ranking there are a number of other things
that you can do to optimise it.
Each search engine has different criteria for ranking
a website.
Google is the hardest to optimise for and is also
the most popular for searches. Google likes content
in a website. That means lots of writing.
Search engine spiders do not read graphics but text.
So to have relevant articles on your site is helpful.
Also they like you to be linked to other well ranked
websites that have some relation to you. So try to
put your link on as many Art related website as possible.
Your ArtUK Artist website is a link that you should
put everywhere too.
There are many technical adjustments that can be made
to your website to help it get a higher ranking. If
would like one of our design team to take a look at
your site and make recommendations to optimise it please
contact design@artuk.com.
